I believe that many women are Artist's at heart, we seem to have this innate desire and ability to create...just look at our bodies a powerhouse of chemicals surging us on to create life within. And birthing something does not necessarily have to lead to a child being born no, there are so many more aspects and levels to our creativity.
Even a 'Home Maker' or a Housewife is a Creatrix...she magically produces meals for the table, beds made, bathrooms that sparkle and, she is usually the one to buy fresh flowers for the dining table and often the one to decide on the decor. A Woman's ability to create beauty, harmony and flow is inherently within...even our mess and chaos can exude a wild beauty.
And then, what if we actually take our Art a step further and use it within our career? What of us as Designers, Musicians, Sculptresses, Dressmakers, Performers and Poets? We are expressing our artistry to the world in the way we write, sing, dance or paint.
So why would we not express our creativity via our dress and sense of style?
Dress as Artistic Expression
I personally feel that a day where I have not created something is a day wasted and there is one easy way that I can incorporate creativity into my day and that is through the way that I dress. Throughout the many versions of me as a woman, the mother, the wife, the dancer (yes for those who don't know, I trained as a Ballet dancer and later on in life performed as a Burlesque dancer), the employee, the workshop leader, my main constant has been my personal artistry within the artform of dressing. A great friend once told me that I am an artist because of the rich tableu I present daily using my body. My body is indeed a canvas ripe for decoration and story telling each and every day.
"I want to be a living work of art"
stated the incredible and inimitable creature that was Marchesa Luisa Casati. And a living work of art she became, immortalised on canvas by many famous artists due to her fascinating and fantastical outfits. Even the muse, inspiration of the artist is an artist in her own right, I firmly believe that. Whenever I used to pose for artists' groups I always relished the fact I was an important part of the work of Art being produced.
We have all heard it takes less than 7 seconds to set a first impression...this means that we have barely been able to utter a word...so the way we are often judged is by the way we look. Our self presentation is the non verbal language to express who we are before anything else. It is that book cover that intrigues or repels before the synopsis on the back has even been read. So, if you are an Artist or work within a creative field, what does your book cover say about you? Does it communicate that you are a dancer or a fashion writer? Does it leave people in no doubt that you are someone led by self expression, colour, design and beauty?
I have often been surprised that many performers have stepped off stage, out of their glittering costumes and into ugg boots and baggy jumpers. The same goes for the fashion designers that create the most stunning and colourful garments only to wear a uniform of jeans and vest themselves..why would you not continue your artistry through to every day life? Why not offer the same level of beauty to yourself as you do to others?
This is why I am passionate about working with creatives who don't know how to merge their art with their personal style. It is just such a shame to not gift ourselves our own creative flair and to not be recognised as the artists we are. Plus, when you embody the creative you are on the outside, you are so much more likely to attract others who are intrigued by your style and want to know more. Your personal style if honed and cultivated is bound to attract more engagement, interest and new opportunities than if you were hiding under a nondescript disguise.
This is why I am hosting a special Creative Dressing Masterclass online on the 5th July.
